For the last hour of the day
Golden Moon Latte
Turmeric and warm spices, for a cup of milk
- Free delivery above Rs. 999
- Made in small batches, so it is made often
About
Turmeric, ashwagandha root, nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon and black pepper, ground fine for a cup of warm milk.
This is the drink a lot of Indian households already make, usually without a recipe and rarely the same way twice. Ours is the version we settled on after making it for each other: more cardamom than most, enough black pepper to notice, and the ashwagandha root rather than an extract, because the root is what was in the house.
It tastes of warm spice and not of turmeric, which surprises people. Milk carries it better than water. It is the last thing in the day rather than the first.
How to use
Warm the milk, do not boil it. Boiled milk takes on a skin and a different taste, and the drink stops being the comfortable thing it is meant to be. A heaped teaspoon is plenty.
- Warm a cup of milk
- Stir in one teaspoon
- Sweeten if you like
- Drink before bed
Ingredients
Made in a kitchen that also handles groundnut.
Storage and shelf life
Keep the lid tight, away from heat and light, and use a dry spoon. Turmeric stains, so keep it off a wet counter.

What goes in
Everything in Golden Moon Latte
-
Turmeric
Curcuma longa
The rhizome is boiled, dried and ground. It is what gives the latte its color and what will stain a cup left standing.
-
Ashwagandha
Withania somnifera
Root, never leaf. The two are different materials and only the root belongs in a drink.
-
Nutmeg
Myristica fragrans
Ground fresh in small amounts. A little carries a long way, which is why it sits last in the latte's list.
-
Cardamom
Elettaria cardamomum
Pods are opened and the seeds ground, because the husk is fibrous and the aroma sits in the seed.
-
Cinnamon
Cinnamomum verum
True cinnamon bark rather than cassia. It is paler, softer and less sharp.
-
Black pepper
Piper nigrum
A small amount, ground with the rest. It is the traditional companion to turmeric in a night-time cup.
