About

Aloe vera, banana powder, flax seed, amla, fenugreek, neem, brahmi and rosemary, ground into a powder you mix fresh.

Eight things, most of them from a garden rather than a shop. Mixed with water it is a light paste; mixed with curd it is a thick one, and both are correct. Nothing is added to make it keep, which is why it arrives dry and you make only as much as you need.

It is a Sunday job. Twenty minutes rather than five, lukewarm water to rinse, and a wide comb afterwards. It smells strongly of fenugreek while it is on, and then it does not.

How to use

Thicker than you think. A runny paste slides off before it has done anything. Lukewarm water to rinse, never hot, and give it twenty minutes rather than five. Once a week is plenty.

  1. Mix to a thick paste with water or curd
  2. Apply to damp hair, roots first
  3. Leave twenty to thirty minutes
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water
Ingredients

For external use only. Patch test first.

Storage and shelf life

Keep the lid tight and use a dry spoon. Water in the jar will spoil it.

Root Revival Hair Mask

What goes in

Everything in Root Revival Hair Mask

  1. Flax seed

    Flax seed

    Linum usitatissimum

Roasted whole then partly ground, so the sprinkle keeps its crunch and the hair mask stays fine.

  2. Aloe vera

    Aloe vera

    Aloe barbadensis

The gel is dried to a powder so the mask can be mixed fresh instead of needing a preservative.

  3. Banana powder

    Banana powder

    Musa acuminata

Dried and milled to a fine powder. It is what makes the mask paste smooth rather than gritty.

  4. Amla

    Amla

    Phyllanthus emblica

Indian gooseberry, dried and ground with the stone removed.

  5. Fenugreek

    Fenugreek

    Trigonella foenum-graecum, methi

Methi. Ground fine, because whole seeds do not rinse out of hair.

  6. Neem

    Neem

    Azadirachta indica

Leaf rather than bark or oil. It is the bitter note you can smell in the dry powder.

  7. Brahmi

    Brahmi

    Bacopa monnieri

Dried and ground whole. A household hair-oil ingredient long before it was a powder.

  8. Rosemary

    Rosemary

    Salvia rosmarinus

The only ingredient in the mask that is not traditionally Indian. It is there for the smell.

Questions

Water or curd for the hair mask?

Either. Water gives a lighter paste that rinses out quickly; curd gives a thicker one that takes longer to wash through.

Do I need to patch test?

Yes, for anything that goes on skin or scalp. A little on the inside of the forearm, left for a day.

Can I use the masks together?

Yes. The hair mask first, then the face mask while the hair one sets, is how the Sunday stop is written.

What is the difference between a refill and a jar?

The same powder. The jar is the glass one you keep on the counter; the refill is the pouch you top it up from, and it costs less.
